How many clothes do your kids REALLY need?...and random updates

Been a while! I'm still here and still kickin'...maybe a little kickin' AND screamin'. It's that time again...time to pack and move! We've been bagging clothes and toys to donate and selling off stuff that we don't need or can't move or just don't want to move. It's crazy to think we just removed TWENTY TWO bags of clothes from our house and still have enough for everyone. I'm very thankful that other homeschooling mamas were able to benefit from our excess! It was mostly all from when we fell upon extra hard times and someone gave to us. So 'twas such a pleasure to pass it forward.

So, what DID we actually keep?
BookWorm being the girl got to keep a little more because she needs some dresses and cutsie stuff for church and girl time and the like.
Pants: Every child kept 5-7 each and if they had them, I tried to keep a variety and not all just jeans or athletic or khaki cargos.
Shirts: We chose 2 shirts per pair of pants for each child. The youngers are the ones that had pants in a variety of colors for the most part so it was a matching game. They now have at least two shirts that will match each pair. If they had a few pairs of jeans, each pair got 2 shirts. After choosing those that I wanted them to keep, I did let them each choose a favorite shirt they just couldn't live without and maybe I can make sure they never are seen in public with it.
Pajamas: Our girl and 2yo boy are the only two that got to keep any pajamas. We went down to just a few sets though. The middle two, the boys that are 5 and 8 went to undershirts and boxers only. Takes up much less room and there's not near the mess when they go searching for pj's!
Socks and underwear: We downsized majorly here...we got rid or any socks that were so similar, yet different because we all know what a pain that is to match. And the kids really have a hard time helping with that. And I really don't like rushing out the door trying to put socks on a kid to find they aren't matches. I don't like un-matching because that means I have two lone socks downstairs without mates! We got rid of holey undies and those that are too small or in abundance. The two boys share the same ones. (ewwwww, right? But who wants to try to separate boy underwear that are the same size for two different kids that really don't care?!) The amount we kept was about a week's worth each and had to fit in the container we keep underwear in. We chunked a bunch of socks and replaced them with new ones of one kind that is easy to match! WiggleWorm is two and doesn't wear underwear yet and we got him some socks for his bin. WiggleWorm girl gave up a bunch of her socks that were just cutesy but didn't match anything and all her holey or mate-less ones...which pretty much meant she had none left. So she got new matching socks as well.

Here's a pic of the "family closet" when we were first moving in and setting it up. You can see the bins on top of the rack and a fraction of the clothing that we had up at this point. No, those bins to the right did NOT stay that nice and pretty. (that's holding each child's shorts/pants on the left and pajamas on the right..and everyone's grew taller by about 2 more feet not long after this)

We also went through our own clothes and downsized a lot...old stuff, stuff that's stained, not worn in a year or more, out of style (not that I'm the stylish type, but some stuff's just gotta go), etc, etc. I now have like...5 tops I can wear. I've let go of the nursing bras, shirts that no longer fit right since I, uhhh....since I don't nurse anymore...hint hint. Hubby gave up his clothes from slimmer days, and I gave up mine from thicker days following all these post-pregnancy days and those from thinner pre-pregnancy days. I might be little, but my hips will never be the same after these last two babies! ;) We thinned out the socks and underclothes and swimwear. Being that we are moving from NW Arkansas to Central Florida, our wardrobe will differ quite a bit anyway. So I'm excited to slowly pick up a few nice warm weather things to hang in my closet.

Our move is a mere 3 weeks away! February 15 is our last day of having this rental home in our name. We are very thankful for the very considerate and understanding landlord we have. I really need to be closer to doctors, family, help, and "town" in general. We are so out in the boonies, and when BookWorm broke her toes very badly last week, it took us over an hour to get to the ER! I have to show you her toes...oh my. What a sight! Don't look if you have a weak stomach...I'm so serious. I'll make it a small and less graphic picture.

Now, health-wise (this will be like a dry science lesson...LOL...kinda)...I had my brain MRI which was all clear. I hear that doesn't rule out MS on its own just like it won't diagnose MS on its own either. But, the doc is almost certain it's Lupus. I'm out of this "flare" or whatever it was for the most part, but obviously still not myself. I'm on half a dozen meds and my Graves Disease (autoimmune hyperthyroidism) is under control now, so we can start pinpointing the rest and doing all these tests. It's obvious there is nervous system involvement and there's a long "maybe" list. Some often come together, like Lupus (SLE) and Raynaud's, both of which I have symptoms. Raynaud's is usually secondary to Lupus, and just another joy of having Lupus. It leaves you with icy cold hands, feet, and often ears and nose as well. It can actually be severe and dangerous, but my icy limbs are merely aggravating and uncomfortable, and sometimes slightly painful as very cold hands can be. Then we have something called CNS Lupus which as you can see, involves the Central Nervous System. We also have an ANS and a PNS...my original heart issues were thought to be from a form of dysautonomia, so that makes me wonder if my Autonomic Nervous System is affected by Lupus and I have symptoms from PNS as well, the Peripheral Nervous System. All together, it has the "slang" title of "Lupus Sclerosis" but formally is known as NP-Lupus and  basically means my nervous systems and brain are affected by lupus, most likely from the inflammation. So far, I'm on none of those nasty Lupus treatments (did you know it's treated with strong sterioids, chemo drugs, antimalarials, and more nasties??) and am being treated for the thyroid, insomnia, heart, and fatigue/fibromyalgia (oh yeah, doctor thinks I have fibro caused by the lupus too) Are we having fun yet? (We would be if you could see me when I take my ambien, or at least if you got to read my status updates I don't remember posting!) I'll be seeking out specialists once we're moved. We will be near some pretty awesome hospitals and advanced health care. Very thankful for that, and the fact I'll have so much family around that is willing to help out with my kids!

Feels good to post again...finally! Been too long! Next I"ll post about what we're doing for school in the midst of packing up, moving, and spending a couple months at Nana's.

Thanks!

Y'all forgive my lack of "interesting" in my writing...my mind still isn't as sharp and creative as it was before this fun little batch of symptoms started and my health took a turn. Just ignore my out-of-orderness (Is that a word? It wasn't, but it is now!) or boring-ness. (that one too!) I'll be back to normal soon and back to writing, advising, reviewing, sharing, helping, entertaining.... so here goes.

The giveaway is over, the prizes are all sent, and hopefully, except for the last couple winners, you've got them in hand already! Thank you to everyone who participated in the giveaway. It was big, busy, tiring, and it went well, even through my unexpected health issues. Thanks to all of you that prayed for me as well. The latest news is that I have multiple nodules on my thyroid and and bloodwork shows I have Graves Disease (autoimmune hyperthyroid) AND Lupus...we are focusing on getting my thyroid levels and heart issues stable and getting me some sleep, something the high thyroid levels have robbed me of! Once my thyroid is level, then we will pinpoint the Lupus, rule out other possibilities like MS and other autoimmune and connective tissue disorders, and confirm the diagnosis. So, I suppose what I've been dealing with has been a flare.

I know I look well, and sometimes I act like I feel well, but I surely pay for it later. I did have an absolutely wonderful, nearly normal energy day the other day...and I used it to clean like mad! My house does look so much better, and it's much more peaceful being decently clean...but it borrowed so much from my next day or two. I was beat! I can tell the medicines are starting to help now though, and I am so, so very thankful for that. I'm very thankful for the doctors God put in our path...after dealing with many symptoms for many, many years, it's because of them (through Him of course!) that we are finally getting some answers and some treatment. Oh! A great read to understand the whole "invisible illness" issue, either living with one or loving someone who is living with one, this article titled "Spoon Theory" is a great read. It's a must read.

So, all in all. I'm feeling better...I don't feel well yet. I do feel better than I have in a long while. Especially better than the last month. Doctor says I'll even get hair growing back in a little bit. That makes me happy :) I have family we don't see often coming for Christmas (I do hope they can deal with my house..hehe) so that'll be some fun and distraction from all this. Did I mention we plan to move soon, too? That should be fun. Yikes! We just moved where we are a few months ago, but we are too far out from help, appointments, support, and town in general. So, please pray someone rents our home so we can get out of this lease and find a home that is right for us in this season.

Merry Christmas, everyone! I'm so glad you're here on my blog, following along as we journey through homeschooling and health issues. I look forward to sharing with you all about it.

Giveaway #6: We Choose Virtues Parenting Cards & Virtue Poster

My family and I have been using, teaching, loving, learning We Choose Virtues for several months, and I am still just as excited about this program as when I first found it. It is certainly becoming popular these days, and for good reason. Who wouldn't want a tool to effectively, efficiently, easily, and explicitly teach their children virtues...who doesn't want to instill character that lasts?!

The catchphrases are truly catchy. The definitions are simple, yet profound, clear, accurate, and meaningful. The positive impact of the "I am..." statements have really challenged my kids to hold themselves to that as well as to see and understand that is what is expected of them. The sentences following that "I am..." statement make it clear to them what they are expected to do or be and to NOT do or be. "I am patient...I wait, and wait, and wait with a smile. I am NOT...pushy, or controlling, and I don't get frustrated or bored when others are slow!"

The scripture version has a verse to go along with the virtue. The community version does not so it is appropriate for public school classrooms, mentoring, counselors (private and school-based), and any other secular setting or family. The scripture version is great for Christian families, private schools, Sunday school, children's church, counselors, and more! There is also a youth version for ages 12-18 available for use in youth mentoring, counseling, schools, families, juvenile court situations, and more. I intend to use it yearly with BookWorm starting next year when she's 11-ish. It comes with a poster, student journal, and a mentor handbook...she will complete a journal each year and we can look back to see how she's matured and how her dreams and goals have evolved. What a treasure!

I've written a few posts before about how we've used We Choose Virtues that you can read here and here. That second link will give you an example of the Parenting Cards in action!

We Choose Virtues will send our winner a set of Parenting Cards AND a Kids Virtues Poster! What a treat! Both of the links will give you more insight in to actually using We Choose Virtues in your home. You can also ask me any questions you have about it on my facebook page or in the comments below this post.
I am SO SO excited to see We Choose Virtues enter another home. I love the thought of parents having excellent tools to teach and lead their children these virtues. You know the ONLY con?? I am convicted regularly of NOT choosing virtue. You will be blessed by the change in your children, the change in yourself, and the peace it brings about to your home.

From a previous post...A mom asked me,  “Can you tell how you used them exactly, and what makes them so wonderful? (As opposed to my current situation of seemingly wasting my breath with all my talking and repetition!)"
Here's my reply:
The first few days I went over each card...The "I am..." and both the definition and the antonym and then the scripture. After a few days of going over them and telling them that these cards and words are helping them learn exactly what behavior we expect to see and exactly what behaviors we will not allow, I had each child pick one or two to be their personal "virtue in focus". This is one they'd decided and I agreed was a weakness they had and needed more help with. So several times a day, I'd randomly say to my son for example, "I am diligent" and have him say back "I start fast, work hard, and I finish strong. I am not slow to get started or lazy, and I don't quit early." After internalizing the virtues and phrases, when I foresee a problem brewing, I can ask them if they are being diligent, helpful, obedient, etc. And not only do they KNOW EXACTLY what I mean, they can then recognize how they were not living up to our expectations without me having to waste my breath long-windedly explaining it for the zillionth time. It really has simplified things! Also, on the “I am Helpful” virtue, I've been able to get them to realize being helpful isn't just doing what I tell them to help with or just what they happen to see, but FINDING ways to be helpful… and I shouldn't have to ask them to do everything (some yes, but not all)..."I am helpful. I FIND things that need to be done and I do them. I am not lazy, selfish, unwilling to work, and I don't have to be asked." it's just brought meaning and clarity to my words and instructions and a peacefulness to me because I can be certain when they need discipline they completely understood the offense and that it wasn't allowed. Now, we spend a few minutes discussing one in particular or maybe go over a few or even all of them. Just spend a few minutes each morning and as needed. I laminated the cards and can take them with me when we go out. If they are getting wild in the van, I can hold up the “I am Kind” card or “I am self-controlled”. It works very well!

One more important note...if you love WCV like I do, even before you get it in your own hands, go here to sign up as an affiliate, start sharing about it with your link, and make 10% commission! Giveaway #3: Pick and Draw

Learn to draw cartoons the fun way!
Awesome stocking stuffer alert! This little deck of cards is so, so fun! Artist Rich Davis created these cards, and is a children's book illustrator who also has a blog you can follow for fun and practical tips and step-by-step drawing lessons! He did an all around amazing job with these cards and we've had a really great time with them.

They are high quality, printed on durable cards with a slick, glossy finish.
They come inside a clear, hard plastic case for safe keeping.
The directions are clear and easy to follow for readers and even my pre-reader was able to follow them.
He makes drawing easy and fun for all ages using ordinary shapes even most preschoolers could draw.
He sparks creativity as kids ponder all the options for each shape to make new and interesting characters.
Learn to draw cartoons the fun way!
 To start the game, which can be played independently or with several players, you set aside the 7 instruction cards. Card 1 tells you to get pencil and paper and choose one of each color card without looking. There are 5 colors for face, nose, eyes, mouth, and hair as seen above in the banner and 9 of each color/catagory. The next 6 cards take you through the steps to draw and give creative tips. {i.e. Card 7 is for hair and the tip mentions drawing the hair like a wig that plops down on the face shape, and a reminder to erase the lines that it covers if it overlaps the face shape.}
One thing that makes it so fun is seeing what everyone draws! It brings about lots of laughs. Also, even if you drew the same combination of cards several times in a row, you can make so many different characters by using his tips to be creative with size, placement, angle, etc. This really gets the kids' creative juices flowing! I dare you to come on over here and give it a try! It'll also earn you an extra entry ;)

A little honesty... Where's giveaway #3?!

......I am SO, SO, SO enjoying reviewing these items and providing them to you for this giveaway. I really am! Tonight you are due to have the giveaway for Pick and Draw. Here's my little bit of honestly...I'm tired. I'm really tired. I have been having heart issues resurface and they are just not improving. I've been having near constant tachycardia (near or over 100 beats per minute) most hours of every single day...for nearly 3 weeks. I spent part of Thanksgiving week hospitalized for testing. I was up late last night, kinda nerves, and mostly talking with the hubs. Then up super early this morning and out the door with all the kids quite early to drive over an hour away for an appointment with a cardiovascular specialist. Then a nice lunch with grandma and a some quality time, then off to be a good mommy and take the kids to the homeschool group Christmas party instead of going home and enforcing naptime :) (and I didn't leave the first time I thought I'd faint from chasing the 2yo around...I found a nice solid wall to hold me instead ;) )
My appointment went well. I do ask for your prayers as we find out for sure if his diagnosis is correct. He thinks I have Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (read about it here or an easier, very basic read here). POTS can be caused by numerous things. This doctor happens to think mine (if it is indeed what I have) is caused by Lupus and/or thyroid issues. WOW. I really didn't expect to hear that! I've had this heart "thing" going on for 9 years...started when I was 22. And now, thankfully, I am getting some real answers and it looks like I'll be getting help that works! I am quite concerned about the possibility of having Lupus, of course, but healing or at least better quality of life is moving within reach.
I'm now on more medicines, higher salt intake, gatorade drinks in place of water (water dilutes electrolytes and mine are not balanced and some are low), and suppossed to fight through the lightheadedness and high heart rate that makes me feel sick and like I'm about to have a heart attack and exercise to help increase blood flow and venous return from my lower half up to my heart and head. And we can't forget those glorious, attractive compression stockings he wants me to wear! It seems my blood somewhat pools in my lower body and my heart isn't able to pump hard enough to keep that settling blood pumping back up...the stockings and the leg muscle workout will help that.
Due to borderline high pressure in my lungs, they'll also be doing a VQ test to check for clots that might be obstructing flow as well as perform a tilt table test to definitively diagnose POTS. Am I scared? Um...I'm a tad nervous.
There's so much to process and after today's outing, just getting my kids fed their supper (cereal for supper....way to be fancy, right?!) and getting them to bed is more than enough for me. This post has been running through my mind through it all as I fought with myself over staying up after they are in bed or not so I could get this review written and posted. I had to force myself to conclude...I am crazy if I put this giveaway above my health!
So, that's my little bit of honesty...I am ducking and ashamedly saying I am foregoing writing this review tonight b/c I am just. so. tired. I hope you can understand! I'll have it up and going tomorrow barring any emergencies or reactions to new meds!

Be in prayer for us, would you? This is hard on me physically, obviously...but it's so emotionally draining too. I can't be the wife and mom I want and need to be...or the maid my house needs. And I haven't gotten a full, complete, start-to-finish day of school in with the two bigs in too long. At least we are hitting the basics and occasionally more , right?!  I wonder if I'll ever feel normal again. And there's guilt,....the guilt of what this must do to my kids and husband. The ones that really don't "get it"...why is mom so tired, cranky, boring, lazy, and why won't she come play ball with us?

So. That is all. I am going to tuck the last two little monkeys into bed. And collapse in mine. Goodbye until tomorrow!

GIVEAWAY #2: Math Essentials Book 1

There are going to be LOTS of Math Essentials books covering many levels and topics up for grabs so check back each day!

We've had the privilege of reviewing Book 1 for grades 4/5 which comes with a lesson DVD. This level contains chapters on Whole Numbers which covers all four operations; Fractions; Decimals; Rations, Proportions, Percent; Geometry; Number Theory and Algebra; Integers; Charts and Graphs; Probablilty and Statistics; Word Problems; and a Review Section. There are about 140 lesson pages including the review and there's an answer key in the back.

Each lesson consists of 5 components. First, the student watches the DVD lesson which is clear and concise step-by-step coverage of the topic. Mr. Fisher is easy going and well spoken, making him easy to listen to and learn from. The HOW is covered very well, but the why isn't developed as much (comparable to Saxon, A Beka, or Horizons). This is typical teaching of math programs, and I do find his lessons much more enjoyable, clear, and easier to follow than programs like those I mentioned or Teaching Textbooks, and certainly on grade level...some towards the end are quite challenging for a 4th grader. This "How-to approach" is certainly perfect for many kids, but keep in mind not only is this a supplement, but I'm a Singapore Math mom which is highly, highly conceptual with a strong mental math and deep critical thinking emphasis. I find Math Essentials to do an excellent job at explaining how and I fill the conceptual holes to my preference with a supplemental Singapore workbook. Easy peasy!

Next on the lesson page, there are four review problems and a speed drill section. I really like the speed drill section. There are two wheels...on each, the middle circle is empty and in the spokes are numbers 0-9 in random order. You fill in the middle circle on each to practice the addition and multiplication facts of your choice based on your child's needs. We started with +3 and x3...I could choose +6 and x8 if I wanted. A good thing is my daughter actually enjoyed these and found them helpful. I'm not good at practicing facts with her, which she really needs. This fit the bill nicely and didn't need me to do it!

Under the review section is a "Helpful Hints" section that serves as a reminder of important points, like keeping the numbers lined up on the right side (ones' place) when adding/subtracting; remember to regroup; steps of long division; or reminders about how to classify triangles by sides and angles. This is followed by a section of ten problems for the student to complete and practice the day's lesson.

At the bottom you'll find a word problem. The problem solving section is a nice addition, but again, it's not higher level conceptual thinking. It's typical word problems where kids can plug the numbers in to what they learned that day. Page 12 in Reviewing Multiplication of Whole Numbers has this word problem: "Each package of paper contains a ream, or 500 sheets, of paper. How many sheets do 7 reams contain?" There is a chapter on word problems that also covers 2-step word problems with both whole numbers and decimals. i.e. "Steak costs $1.25 per pound. How much does 4 pounds cost?" It's important for kids to learn how to read and apply the numbers, but I do find my student knows how to just take the numbers and plug it in to the formula being learned, unless it is a problem like those found in more conceptual based stand-alone programs. The word problems in Math Essentials neither make it or break it.

The lessons take BookWorm about 20-30 minutes including the DVD lesson. It's easy to navigate and she can do it independently. I do find Math Essentials to do an excellent job at filling in her math gaps, as well as reviewing and catching-up in some areas (she's my oldest, meaning she's been my math program guinea pig and we've switched a lot which has left gaps). I would recommend it as a great daily review program alongside a strong full math program that is primarily mastery-based, or as a catch-up like we're using it to cover those basics before jumping into a faster paced or more advanced program. I personally wouldn't use it alongside a very spiral math program as the review is already very, very covered in those programs and it may be overkill or burdensome to your child. It has gotten the job done in our home without fuss and has met out needs. My daughter knows how to do the math without question. I find it to be a great supplemental program and definitely recommend it!

GIVEAWAY #1: Buck Denver Asks...Why Do We Call It Christmas? DVD

Let's get this started with some Christmas fun! This fantastic DVD is a perfect family Christmas movie! Along with the DVD, there are some goodies included in the case. First, there's an access code to redeem your free digital copy of the video! I'm not a techy mom, but I'd imagine being able to download it to your computer means you can get it on your iPad or what have you and watch it on the go!
Here's a little sneak peak!

Next, there's a small booklet with a link to claim your free advent calendar from, as well as a free subscription to, Thriving Family Magazine from Focus on the Family during the month of December. This booklet also includes a coloring page of the DVD case cover and a brief "What did you learn?" discussion guide to go over with your own little monkeys after the show is over. It includes 5 questions that you'll all be able to answer in the end!

So what did we learn from Buck? As it states on the case, "Sure, you know the Christmas story. But do you know the story of Christmas?" We do now!

Well, we all had questions... why do we call it Christmas? Why December 25th? What's with the Christmas tree...isn't that a pagan tradition? Who was St. Nicholas and where did Santa Claus come from...and isn't Santa Claus just a fictional pagan character to make greedy kids (haha...I do have one that still believes even though he knows we, his parents and siblings, do not)? What's up with hanging stockings? What is our purpose behind all the Christmas celebration and special traditions we do? What's the history behind it all?  What do ANY of our popular traditions have to do with Jesus' birthday? Phil says he can show us how they ALL point to Jesus and we can stop bouncing our kids between "Jesus Christmas" and "Santa Christmas".

My kids and I so enjoyed this movie! It was pleasantly different than most Christmas movies that just show the typical traditions in action and the tizzy of the season or lots of snow and elves and presents...this one explains and entertains and proclaims! We learned the answer to all of those questions and more and my kids stayed engaged...from the just-turned-2 to the I'm-too-old-for-this-10. I can tell you that my concerns of incorporating pagan culture into our sacred holiday have been alleviated. It was a real history lesson that showed us the true Christian roots in all these traditions from the Christmas tree to Santa and more! The best part is it has a very, very strong presentation of the gospel within the movie iteself, as well as a personal presentation from Phil Vischer afterward.

I highly, highly recommend this video. And if the rest of Buck Denver's videos are as great as this one, you'll want them all! I know we do! Right now, you can get DVD 1-6 set for just $39.95 plus shipping! That's just 7.98 per DVD compared to the regular price on their regular site of 14.99 each!!! You must follow this link to get this great deal! What a great gift for the kids in your life!

My 10yo BookWorm wrote up her own review...here goes!
Buck Denver is the funniest educational show on Christmas I've ever seen! It keeps things fun and still maintains the educationalness. Even my TV picky "strap him down to get him to watch a show without running off" 2yo brother sat on the floor to watch without being told! If you've ever seen VeggieTales, take the fun from it and triple it! Then you have how fun it is to watch this show. Age recommendations from me are ages 1-6, but it's also a great family movie night pick! I love how it explains holiday chaos so easily.
I never even thought of some of the questions, but when I did, I started really wanting the answers. I was very surprised to find that every one of our Christmas traditions have Christian roots! Even the jolly red guy himself! I hope you get a chance to see this awesome show!  ~BookWorm
